Its pilots considered the Starfighter to be a "Lady" - beautiful, elegant but similarly also capricious. The introduction of the Starfighter into the Belgian Air force in 1963 was - for all involved - something of a quantum leap. In a short period of time, they had to catch up with the experience gathered during a large scale aircraft development. The Starfighters performance would today still be considered exceptional - a climb from ground level to 13594 m (44600 ft) in only 4 minutes and 22 seconds, an acceleration from 880 km/h (550 mph) to 2100 km/h (1305 mph) at 10668 m (35000 ft) in just over 4 minutes - with two Sidewinder Missiles on the wings and a maximum rate of climb of 243.8 m/s (800 ft/s). The Belgian Air Force deployed the Starfighter as a Fighter-Bomber with the 23rd and the 31st Squadrons of the 10th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Kleine Brogel, which later became a member of the NATO Tiger Meet Association. F-104G FX-52 received a completed Tiger camouflage for the 1978 Tiger Meet, the first individual livery in the Belgian Air Force and the prelude to a splendid series.
